Finding Calm Amid the Chaos: The Power of Your Breath
Patti Abel | APR 20, 2025
Life has a way of pulling us in a hundred different directions. Between work, family, responsibilities, and the constant stream of notifications, it's easy to find ourselves rushing from one task to the next without ever slowing down.
Have you ever noticed that during those hectic moments your breathing changes?
Many of us begin taking shallow breaths without even realizing it. As tension builds, our shoulders rise, our jaw tightens, and our minds become increasingly overwhelmed.
Sometimes the simplest reset is the one we overlook most—taking a slow, intentional breath.
One deep inhale followed by a long, unhurried exhale can feel like a sigh of relief, as though the weight of the day has become just a little lighter.
Breathing is something we do automatically, yet it has a profound influence on how we feel, move, and respond to life's challenges.
A full, relaxed breath helps:
Release unnecessary tension
Improve posture and movement
Increase oxygen throughout the body
Support focus and mental clarity
Encourage a calmer, more regulated nervous system
When we slow our breathing, we're often able to slow our thoughts as well.
Take a moment right now.
Without trying to change anything, simply notice your breath.
How far does it travel into your body?
Do you feel it mostly in your chest or does it expand into your ribs and abdomen?
Are there areas that feel restricted or tense?
What does your posture look like?
Now gently lengthen your spine and allow yourself to sit or stand tall without becoming rigid.
Take a slow, comfortable breath in.
Imagine your breath creating space throughout your body—expanding your ribs, softening tight muscles, and bringing fresh energy to every cell.
Then slowly exhale.
Let your shoulders soften.
Release the tension you've been carrying.
Imagine the breath washing through you like the ocean tide—bringing in fresh energy with every inhale and carrying away stress and mental clutter with every exhale.
Repeat for several breaths, allowing your body and mind to settle.
Even five minutes of intentional breathing can make a noticeable difference.
On especially busy days, pause two or three times to reconnect with your breath. These brief moments of awareness often become the reset we didn't realize we needed.
If you enjoy aromatherapy, consider adding a favorite calming essential oil to your practice. Frankincense, citrus oils like Orange or Lemon, or another scent you find grounding can help create a peaceful environment while encouraging you to slow down and become fully present.
The aroma itself isn't the magic—it's the ritual of intentionally creating space to breathe, pause, and reconnect.
Our bodies weren't designed to live in a constant state of hurry.
Give yourself permission to pause.
Take a few quiet moments to breathe, pray, meditate, or simply sit in stillness. Allow your mind to quiet, your heart to settle, and your body to release what it no longer needs to carry.
When we take time to fill our own cup, we're better able to pour into the lives of those around us with patience, compassion, and grace.
"For you have been called to live in freedom..." — Galatians 5:13
May you find peace in the pause and strength in every breath.
Blessings,
Patti
