Have you ever paused to consider how the words we use—whether spoken out loud or in our minds—can shape not only our emotions but also our physical experience?

The words we choose don't just shape our own experience—they ripple outward, influencing how others feel, respond, and relate to us.

Words carry weight. They can energize us, ground us, inspire us, or even deplete us. The fascinating thing is that even words with similar meanings can create very different experiences—both internally and externally.

Let's explore this through a body-based lens.

What Does the Word "Slow" Feel Like in Your Body?

Say it aloud:

Slow.

Now pause and notice what happens in your body.

  • Does your posture change?

  • Does your breathing shift?

  • Do you feel heavier? Softer? More settled?

  • Or do you notice feelings of fatigue or resistance?

When I speak—or even think—the word slow, I notice a sensation of becoming more grounded, weighted, and still. Sometimes that's exactly what's needed. Other times, it can feel heavy or even limiting.

For some people, the word brings a sense of calm.

For others, it carries an entirely different meaning.

I once had someone tell me,

"Moving slow makes me feel old."

That simple statement sparked my curiosity.

If the word slow doesn't create the feeling we're hoping for, what other words might?

Try These Words Instead

Instead of slow, experiment with words like:

  • Deliberate

  • Intentional

  • Purposeful

  • Informed

  • Keen

  • Perceptive

Pause with each one.

Say each word aloud.

Notice what changes.

  • Does your posture shift?

  • Does your breath become easier?

  • Do you feel more focused?

  • More capable?

  • More connected?

The tone and texture of a word matter.

Each carries its own rhythm, energy, and emotional landscape. When we speak or think those words—especially while moving—they influence how we experience our bodies and how we approach the task before us.

Sometimes a single word can completely change how movement feels.

Your Body Is Listening

One of my beloved mentors, Marie-José Blom, often reminded us:

"Speak kindly to your body—your cells are listening."

That simple statement stayed with me.

It was the first time I truly began paying attention to how the language I used influenced how I felt, moved, and experienced my own body.

Since then, I've become much more intentional about replacing words that feel defeating or restrictive with words that invite curiosity, confidence, and possibility.

What About You?

Take a few moments to experiment with your own words.

You might even journal about them or speak them aloud during your next movement practice.

Ask yourself:

  • Which word created the most positive felt sense in your body?

  • Which helped you feel more present, steady, or connected?

  • Is there a word you frequently use that creates tension, fear, or resistance?

You may be surprised by what you discover.

The Words We Choose Matter

Our words become our thoughts.

Our thoughts influence our actions.

Our actions become our habits.

Whether you're moving through a Pilates practice, navigating a difficult conversation, or simply going about your day, the language you choose has the power to shape your experience.

Sometimes the smallest shift isn't in how you move—it's in the words you use to describe the movement.

Choose words that invite awareness.

Choose words that encourage possibility.

Choose words that help you move through life with greater intention.

I'd love to hear what you discover.

What word swap made the biggest difference for you?
